When I was a freshman in High School, one of my good friends gave me a Christmas gift that I still have to this day…a red, metal mailbox decorated with a beautiful plaid bow tied to the handle.
Inside, the mailbox was filled to the brim with See’s lollypops.
I loved the gift then. I still love it today.
Of course, those lollypops were devoured in a matter of days but I still have the beautiful, red mailbox. I pull it out every Christmas. I always find a special spot for it. It’s a focal point of my Christmas decorating.
My friend and I were great friends in High School but sadly as the years rolled by and time took it’s toll as time often tends to do, we aren’t really friends anymore. We’ve drifted apart. It’s sad but I also know that this is the reality of life. People grow up, move away and move on. It’s the way life goes but to this day I still really miss our friendship.
When I look at the mailbox every Christmas, I’m reminded of so many things..of sweet friendships that have changed, of wonderful gifts received, of treasured memories that I will cherish for a lifetime.
Life may have sadly moved on for both of us but I still have the mailbox. And I remember, each Christmas, the wonderful friendship she and I had all those years ago. And I smile.
Merry Christmas, my old friend.
